Directly modulated narrowband slab-coupled optical waveguide laser

A slab-coupled optical waveguide laser (SCOWL) is simultaneously wavelength stabilised with a fibre Bragg grating and characterised under a narrow pulse and high repetition rate direct modulation scheme that is suitable for efficient pulse position modulation format optical communication systems. The SCOWL exhibits a large, nearly circular, singlemode that couples efficiently to optical fibre. With a pulse width of 35 ns and a repetition rate of 2.5 MHz, a peak fibre-coupled output power of 1.6 W is achieved for a wavelength stabilised 965 nm SCOWL.
