With the rapid development of Chinese economy, quick and dynamically updating land use maps is an urgent problem to be solved. Besides the traditional aerial photography, the commercial high-resolution remote sensing satellites, such as SPOT5, Ikonos, QuickBird, and OrbView-3 provide us the multiple remote sensing data source choices for quick updating large-scale land use maps. Taking the Huairou district of Beijing as the test site, we introduce the technique and describe the work flow of quick updating county level 10k scaled land use maps using high-resolution remote sensing imagery. At the same time, we discuss the solution to the key techniques, then compare and analyze the adaptivity of those remote sensing data source to areas with different economy development level and with different topography and landforms. The method presented in this paper can quickly and duly obtain the latest land use information, and it can provide the necessary technical support on land resource conservation, management and utilization.
