Cartography and Mapping

In the previous survey of progress in cartography Board (1981) identified a con tinued interest in both computer applications and subject-testing experiments in map use. This year's review notes a particular interest in cartographic data struc tures, computer-assisted generalization, and applications of remote sensing; a developing concern for the effects of automation and telecommunications on not only the appearance of maps and their uses but also the publication of geographic information; and a growing realization that psychophysical and some other per ceptual-cognitive studies of map use seem to have promised more than can be delivered. All three trends suggest for the 1980s a maturing, vigorous, and more eclectic cartography, unencumbered by the prevailing communication paradigm of the 1970s.
