AUSTRALIAN INDIGENOUS ROAD SAFETY: A CRITICAL REVIEW AND RESEARCH REPORT, WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO SOUTH AUSTRALIA, OTHER INDIGENOUS POPULATIONS, AND COUNTERMEASURES TO REDUCE ROAD TRAUMA

This report explores, with a focus on South Australia, national and international literature on Indigenous road safety and countermeasures. It uses crash/incident data from Coronial records, unpublished community-based research reports, official statistics and various other publications from the past 20 years. In critically considering these data, it adopts a social health perspective to provide insight into various Indigenous views on countermeasures to reduce road trauma. In doing so, it introduces policy and theoretical frameworks and cultural considerations, which may help to pave the way for further collaborative efforts. Eighteen recommendations are proposed concerning information availability and quality, potential action by government, community-based initiatives, collaboration between the government and community sectors, and further research strategies.
