Traffic Density Control for Automated Highway Systems

In this paper, the authors design, analyze and simulate a roadway controller for an automated highway system (AHS) that achieved desired traffic densities along the freeway lane. A macroscopic traffic flow model that is modified for AHS operation is used for control design and analysis. Simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller and the benefits that AHS can bring to traffic flow.
