LX Electrical Responses from the Auditory Nervous System

Early in the nineteenth century Fourier gave the world a mathematical technique for the analysis of complex sounds. In the middle of the nineteenth century, Helmholtz's monumental work oriented for decades to come the thinking of students of hearing in the concepts of localized resonance. As recently as a quarter of a century ago the sound sources of the laboratory were tuning forks and sinewave oscillators. Such equipment limitations determined the stimuli that the experimenters could conveniently control.
