Optimal control of penicillin production, using a mini-computer

SummaryThe development and application of an optimal control strategy is described for use in laboratory-scale fed batch fermentations, where little or no supervision is possible. The system of control described is anticipatory, with adjustments to feed rate etc. being made in response to future limitations, and embodies a principle that should be generally useful. Another possibility is the provision of sugar-feed patterns of any desired shape, with automatic protection against the development of unfavourable growth conditions.
