THE DELAY PROBLEM FOR CROSSING AN N LANE HIGHWAY. IN VEHICULAR TRAFFIC SCIENCE

This research considers the problem of calculating the statistics of delay at a stop sign on a minor road due to n lanes of independent, Poisson streams of traffic on an intersecting major road. Assumptions regarding the form of the gap acceptance (GA) function are given. The first and second moments of the waiting time for the special case of step functions for the GA are calculated. A simulation study shows that the waiting time density can be approximated by Pearson Type III distributions. An approximate formula for the moments of waiting time is also given, which represents the n lane highway by an equivalent single lane highway for which simpler formulae are available.
