The Figural Simplicity of Parallel Lines.

ABRAVANEL, EUGENE. The Figural Simplicity of Parallel Lines. CHILD DEVELOPMENT, 1977, 48, 708-710. The figural simplicity or salience of parallel lines was studied in 3and 4-year-olds by means of a figural matching procedure where parallelism was a basis for judging similarity. Results showed that even 3-year-olds used the Euclidean property of parallelism as a source of information for matching, and that the effect was even stronger among 4-year-olds. Findings support Arnheim's contention about the simplicity of parallel lines and are consistent with Bryant's formulation on the role of parallelism constructions for judging and remembering the orientation of lines.
