Resource-Constrained Motion Estimation for 3D-HEVC

The extension of the latest high-efficiency video coding standard (HEVC), 3-dimensional HEVC (3D-HEVC), plays an important role in 3D video applications for power-limited handheld devices. However, 3D-HEVC texture-and-depth coding is expensive in terms of the coding bandwidth because motion estimation operations are used to determine the best coding mode decision. An increase in the coding views for 3D-HEVC coding have rapidly increased the resources required for the coding bandwidth. Therefore, a bandwidth-constrained 3D-HEVC motion estimation algorithm is proposed in this paper to solve the aforementioned emerging problem. Experimental results demonstrate the proposed algorithm has a remarkable coding performance in terms of the coding bitrate and coding quality.
