The authors present a 16-level gray-scale driver architecture and a full-color driving technique that makes full-color TFT-LCDs (thin-film transistor liquid-crystal displays) with 64 gray-scale levels possible. The driver has the same level of integration as conventional eight-level gray-scale driver ICs. The driver has nine analog switches and nine drive voltages for each output. The 16 levels are generated by selecting one of eight drive voltages or two adjacent drive voltages. Using frame rate control and optimizing the combination of voltages over two frames gives 64-gray-scale driving using 16-level gray-scale drivers.<<ETX>>
