Fault-tolerant aspects of MPC

There is considerable motivation for devising control systems which are able to survive major equipment failures or damage. The architecture of model predictive control (MPC), with its explicit internal model and constrained optimization, offers a promising approach to attacking the problem of fault-tolerant control. This is enhanced by some inherent fault-tolerant properties of MPC, by the emergence of powerful model-management methodologies, and by the flexible yet operator-friendly interfaces which are possible with MPC.
