EHD Analysis of Orthogonally-displaced Pressure Dam Bearings

The elasticity of liner significantly affects the performance of a hydrodynamic bearing. Study of the elastohydrodynamics of some of the bearings such as circular, elliptical and offset-halves pressure dam etc., has already been reported. In the present paper, the study of an orthogonally displaced pressure dam bearing, which is considered to be the most stable among the various two lobe bearings is undertaken. The study shows that the peak pressures in the upper and lower lobe decrease as the flexibility of the liner is increased. The zone of infinite stability and minimum threshold speed increase with increase in the flexibility of the liner.
