Modulation organized vector quantization, MOR-VQ

Efficient zero-redundancy error protection is possible with joint source and channel coding. The purpose of this work is to study a novel method for the design of a VQ for bandlimited AWGN channels, named MORVQ. Based upon Kohonen learning and the GLA, this method maps codebook vectors to modulation symbols in a robust manner, thereby minimizing source distortion due to channel noise. A VQ can be made considerably more robust when optimized over the modulation set as compared to the Hamming space. Simulation results prove MOR-VQ to be a very simple, yet effective and robust design strategy for robust VQ.<<ETX>>
