U.S. Manufacture of Rail Vehicles for Intercity Passenger Rail and Urban Transit

A total of $17.7 billion in funding for urban transit and intercity rail travel was provided for in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. This is a significant increase in rail funding in the United States, over former years. In order to determine the manufacturing potential for these vehicles, this report presents information on United States supply chain for passenger rail vehicles and rail transit vehicles. Some of the report findings are as follows: (1) At least 249 manufacturing locations in 35 states are included in the supply chain. (2) The supply chain contains a number of gaps - manufacturing areas of the supply chain that are not located in the United States. (3) An estimated 10,000 to 14,000 jobs in the United States involve the assembly and manufacture of locomotives, and passenger and rail transit cars. If this industry is to continue to grow in the United states, additional investments will be required.
