Chapter 5 refers to the benefits, that arise from knowledge-based drawing interpretation from the user’s point of view. This chapter concentrates more on the inside of the drawing interpretation component of SPRITE. First, the important role of knowledge for interpretation tasks is explained and the system’s underlying decomposition of knowledge is presented. Then, the basic architecture and solution principles are described, and important decisions on the design of the system are explained and compared with alternative architectures and solution principles. This is followed by the design of the prototype for interpretation of technical drawings. The interpretation process is presented as a particular kind of high-level knowledge processing. Finally, the strategy of dimension checking of engineering drawings is explained in detail.
