Optimization methods for metal cutting

Abstract In this study the general optimization problem in metal cutting operations is formulated. The features of the mathematical models representing these operations are investigated and discussed, so that the suitability of the different computer optimization methods can be determined. A comprehensive study of most of the available computer optimization codes, which may be used for metal cutting operations, has been carried out. A short description of each of these codes is given showing its features and limitations. The successful use of some of these codes in a number of related research topics is also mentioned. Finally, classifications of these codes, and their relative merits for optimization of metal cutting operations are given.
