Documentation for the non-scientist

In the past few years the number of computer users from the humanities and social sciences has increased markedly. Realizing the tremendous advantage that text processing programs and statistical packages afford in the pursuit of their work, the "non-scientists" (1) have begun to regard the computer as a necessary academic tool. As more and more members of the liberal arts community attempt to acquire computing skills, those of us charged with the task of providing instruction in the use of computer programs and systems must take into account the needs and, particularly, the perspective and intellectual habits of a fundamentally new breed of computer user.
