MEASUREMENTS OF TURBULENT HEAT TRANSPORT IN A BOUNDARY LAYER WITH AN EMBEDDED STREAMWISE VORTEX

Abstract All three components of the turbulent heat flux vector ( uθ , vθ , and wθ ) and most of the components of the Reynolds stress tensor are measured in a boundary layer disturbed by an embedded streamwise vortex. Some similarities are observed between the cross-plane heat fluxes ( vθ and wθ ) and the analogous Reynolds stress terms ( uv and uw ). However, the vortex interaction with the boundary layer seems to enhance heat transport more than momentum transport, especially in the vicinity of the vortex core. The cross-plane heat transport vector, formed from vθ and wθ , is nearly perpendicular to the isotherms at all points, suggesting that an isotropic eddy-diffusivity model would be suitable for this flow.
