ONLINE TRAFFIC MODELS - A LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Real time traffic information is needed for traffic information and control purposes. A study was conducted to gather experiences from case studies concerning online traffic modelling to identify the challenges posed by working in real time. This paper discusses prior research and reviews the case studies on which the research is based. The case studies are an online travel time prediction model, a real-time traffic microsimulation model and traffic situation models for fuzzy signal control. Challenges specific to the online environment and relating to data, data transfer, the monitoring system and traffic model are discussed.
