A new method for the design of digital controllers is described. The method, given in the form of a computer package, makes use of the time domain matrix techniques and incorporates routines for: (a) time domain evaluation of the system transfer matrix, (b) servo and regulator mode design for any form of disturbance input, (c) evaluation of intersample response, (d) stability assessment and (e) choice of optimum sampling interval and hold circuit. The package has been used to design optimum controllers for the on-line control of a water-heating process by using an Argus 400 computer.
