Notes on Some Grasses. VIII. On Leaf Structure of Arundinella and Garnotia

1. Transections of leaves of six species of Garnotia and ten species of Arundinella were examined. In the former genus, two types and, in the latter, four types were recognized. Type 1 of Garnotia resembles type 1 of Arundinella, and Garnotia type 2 is very like Arundinella type 3 (table 2). 2. In both genera unique features were found which suggest that the two are related. The epidermis of species in both genera have dumbbell- or saddle-shaped siliceous cells and threadlike bicellular microhairs. 3. Since the spikelet structure is quite different in these genera, Garnotia is treated as an independent tribe, Garnotieae, tentatively placed near the Arundinelleae.
