Characterization of the new 1 GPa piston-cylinder assembly of PTB

Abstract A new 1 GPa piston-cylinder assembly (PCA) operated in controlled-clearance mode was investigated. Its zero-pressure effective area, pressure distortion and jacket pressure distortion coefficients were investigated by cross-float measurements against three reference PCAs operated in the ranges of 400 MPa and 1 GPa, theoretically, based on its materials’ elastic constants and the Lame theory, as well as by experiments with variable jacket pressure. It is demonstrated that, with the metrological characteristics stated, the relative uncertainties of 100 MPa and 1 GPa pressures measured with the new PCA are equal to 1.6·10 –5 and 4.4·10 –5 , respectively.
