Cell‐associated amylase activity in Cytophaga johnsonae

Eighty‐eight per cent of the amylase activity of cultures of Cytophaga johnsonae is cell‐associated. The cell‐associated amylase has optimal activity at pH 7 and 45°C and is completely inhibited by 50 mmol/1 EDTA. Starch in the growth medium induces amylase activity and the respiration rate of starch‐grown cells of C. johnsonae is stimulated by starch, glycogen, maltose or glucose.
