Conservative Approach to Computerised Marking of Mathematics Assignments

MSOR Connections Aug 2004 Vol 4 No 3 Computerised marking of weekly mathematics assignments has several potential benefits: 1) randomised questions reduce plagiarism, 2) immediate feedback increases motivation and 3) staff-time spent on marking is reduced. We describe a practical way of introducing computerised marking into departmental teaching gradually, without disrupting current practice. The approach has been followed at the University of York during last year. It makes use of the open-source software packages AiM and Moodle.
