DROUGHTS IN SICILY AND COMPARISON OF IDENTIFIED DROUGHTS IN MEDITERRANEAN REGIONS

An analysis of at-site and regional drought characteristics of precipitation series in Sicily is presented, based on the application of the run method to two areas in Sicily as well as to the whole Sicilian territory. The drought analysis has been preceded by stationarity and randomness testing of the precipitation series. Comparison of the results of similar investigations carried out in Portugal, Tunisia and Jordan has been carried out by analysing the linear trend results and the dimensionless drought characteristics. Further, contemporaneous occurrences of deficit have been assessed by means of conditional probability concepts. Results confirm that there is a general increase in the frequency, severity and duration of droughts in the recent years over the Mediterranean, which can partly be explained in terms of a general negative trend of precipitation.
