Multi-scale Shape Monitoring Sensors Based on Fiber Bragg Grating Sensing Technique for Road Structures

Road structure on site performance monitoring is a challenging task. Embedded sensors with high accuracy, large coverage and good reliability are one of the key factor to ensure the monitoring efficiency. This paper introduces two types of shape measurement sensors based on Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensing technique for road structure, which can provide local static shape measurement with high accuracy and large-scale layer shape measurement respectively. These two types of sensors can be used for pavement rutting and substructure settlement monitoring. Different kind of lab tests have been carried out to study the accuracy and reliability of the proposed sensors. The results prove their potential for practical application.
