Abstract A mathematical and economic model of a single effect multi-stage flash distillation desalination system is developed and used to formulate a method for cost optimization. Within the mathematical model the effects of salinity transitions upon specific heat and boiling point elevation are accounted for. All process flow rates, heat transfer surface areas, flashing temperatures, and the number of stages are allowed to vary in determining the minimum cost of producing water. The optimization technique allows for maximum design flexibility without reverting to an overly simplified model of the system, so that the results provide a reliable basis for decision.
