Relations of Body Temperature, Size, and Crawling Speed of the Common Garter Snake, Thamnophis s. sirtalis

A multiple regression analysis of the maximum crawling speed of Thamnophis s. sirtalis indicated that speed increase was associated with higher body temperature and increased body weight. Speed increase was associated with increasing length up to about 45 cm; longer snakes showed a speed decrease. A comparison of maximum and cruising speeds showed that the former was temperature dependent, while the latter was temperature independent or nearly so.
