OIE Terrestrial Manual 2010 1 C H A P T E R 2 . 7 . 1 4 . 1 SHEEP POX AND GOAT POX 2 SUMMARY

Sheep pox and goat pox are viral diseases of sheep and goats characterised by fever, generalised 4 papules or nodules, vesicles (rarely), internal lesions (particularly in the lungs), and death. Both 5 diseases are caused by strains of capripoxvirus, all of which can infect sheep and goats. Although 6 most of the strains examined cause more severe clinical disease in either sheep or goats, some 7 strains have been isolated that are equally pathogenic in both species. [It has been proposed that the 8 malignant pox diseases of sheep and goats caused by capripoxvirus as well as Kenyan sheep and goat pox, 9 Indian goat dermatitis and north African stone pox of sheep and goats be referred to as capripox.] 10
