Effect of chronic and acute exposure to total dissolved gas supersaturation on growth and survival in juvenile rock carp (Procypris rabaudi Tchang)

The total dissolved gas (TDG) supersaturation generated by flood discharge from high dams has been proven to cause gas bubble disease (GBD) and mortality in fish, and to threaten their survival. In recent years, the problem of TDG supersaturation has been a cause of great concern due to the construction of a number of high dams in China and it has become a severe eco-environmental problem. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of TDG supersaturation on rock carp (Procypris rabaudi Tchang) residing in the upper Changjiang (Yangtze) River. Juvenile rock carp samples were respectively subjected to chronic exposure of TDG supersaturated water at low levels (108, 112 and 116%) for 42 days and were returned to saturated water with the levels of 100% for 42 days after two hours of acute TDGS levels (125, 131, 136 and 141%). The growth rate and mortality were measured to evaluate the effect of TDGS on growth and survival in juvenile rock carp. The result showed no elevated rate of mortality in juvenile rock carp due to the GBD after the exposure of TDG supersaturated water. Furthermore, there was no significant effect of chronic and acute exposure to TDG supersaturated water on growth rate.
