5G Experimental Trials of 4.5 GHz Band Digital Beamforming in Dense Urban Area

Massive MIMO using beamforming (BF) is a promising technique for fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication system. In low SHF bands such as 3–6 GHz, fully digital Massive MIMO with digital BF can be easily introduced. Although it is expected that earlier 5G commercial services will launch in dense urban areas, 4.5 GHz-band 5G experimental trials have never been performed in such areas. Therefore, this paper presents some results of recent 4.5 GHz-band 5G experimental trials using digital-BF Massive MIMO in the dense urban area. It shows both coverage with single user and system throughput with four-user that are closely located in Tokyo, Japan.
