An intelligent urban traffic network controller and simulator

Abstract A microcomputer-based traffic controller and simulator for an actual stretch of road are described. The control strategy for the controller is vehicle actuated, i.e. both the cycle and phase times depend on the number of vehicles entering the junction in the previous cycle. Thus, a real-time control of the traffic signal timings is possible. The control is of closed loop type, and it is possible to detect traffic congestion. A back-up fixed-time-based plan is also available. ‘Green-wave’ progression [1,2] is considered for implementation. This ensures that the last vehicle crossing the junction prior to the main junction is able to pass through this junction with minimum delay. An important feature is development of a software simulator. This helps to thoroughly test and implement the traffic scheme developed. This software package can also be used as a tool in the simulation of any other control strategy involving vehicle intersections. This software simulator is capable of simulating the traffic status of up to eight junctions. The results were very satisfactory.
