Social Structure Discovery Using Genetic Algorithm

As a way of simplifying, size reducing and making the structure of each social network be comprehensible,blockmodelingconsistsoftwomajor,essentialcomponents:partitioningofactorsto equivalentclasses,calledpositions,andclarifyingrelationsbetweenandwithinpositions.Whileactor partitioninginconventionalblockmodelingisperformedbyseveralequivalencedefinitions,generalized blockmodeling,searches,locally,thebestpartitionvectorthatbestsatisfiesapredeterminedstructure. Theneed forknownpredefinedstructureandusinga local searchprocedure,makesgeneralized blockmodelingberestricted.Inthispaper,theauthorsformulateblockmodelproblemandemploy ageneticalgorithmfortosearchforthebestpartitionvectorfittingintooriginalrelationaldatain termsoftheknownindices.Inaddition,duringmultiplesamplesandsituationssuchasdichotomous, signed,ordinalandintervalvalued,andmultiplerelations,thequalityofresultsshowsbetterfitness thanclassicandgeneralizedblockmodeling.
