Design Engineering Scholarship

Design engineering in Australian universities has a proud tradition, but it may be under threat from the current funding pressures. Simultaneously, engineering schools are struggling with their response to the national Review on Engineering Education. This paper proposes that a way forward is to adapt Boyer's multi-faceted perspective on scholarship, as discovery, as integration, as application and as teaching, to design engineering. This will provide a sound basis for transforming the culture in engineering schools by building on and extending the traditions of design engineering.
