Ofcourse,searchenginesdonotalwaysmeettheseexpectations. Thousandsofengineersworkat‐orwith‐searchenginecompaniesto tunethewaysthoseenginesmodelandcomputerelevance.Relevance, however,isnotaone-size-fits-allmeasure.Forexample,websearch enginestypicallymeasuretherelevanceofwebpagesusingbibliometric considerationssuchasGoogle’sPageRankmeasureandthe“anchortext” associatedwithlinksconnectingintopages.Incontrast,enterprisescannot typicallyrelyonarichnetworkconnectingthedocumentsstoredintheir repositories;hence,theirsearchengineslookforrelevancesignalsin documentstructure(forexample,titleandkeywordfields)andconsiderfactors specifictotheirdomainsorapplications.Ofcourse,almosteverysearch engine’sfilteringandrankingalgorithmstakeintoaccounttherelationship betweenwordsinthesearchqueryandwordsthatoccurindocuments.
