Experiments with animals and laboratory studies on children are described and critically discussed, with a generous quota of tables and photographic illustrations. The third part describes the development in the child of the major psychological functions, which include the following: the appearance of motor responses and their gradual integration into more complex motor performances; evidence for growth trends in emotional behaviour; trends of development seen in the sensorium-perceptual and conceptual; the development of sounds in infancy and the integration of speech and language; the growth of intelligence (which includes a critical evaluation of numerous intelligence tests); and sections devoted to personality development, the acquisition of "social awareness", "social attitudes and personal vaules", and "integration and adjustment" of the personality during childhood. The fourth part deals with the influences of home, institution and culture on the behaviour and growth of the child. Parental attitudes and interpersonal relationships are discussed, and cultural beliefs and practices which may shape a child's personality are considered.
