High resolution laser spectroscopy of ions in crystals

It is the intent of this chapter to review specific results obtained when the laser spectroscopic methods presented in Chap. 4 are used in the investigation of ions in crystalline solids. Specifically, the majority of the work that has been done up to date and which will be surveyed here has been addressed to optically active ions in insulators. The general features of the spectra of these materials are well established and form the basis of the tutorial presented in Chap. 1. Of course, the application of new empirical technique invariably results in new findings, and this area of condensed matter Physics is no exception. Principally, the higher resolutions attainable in the frequency and temporal domains have given us a much more detailed view of the processes which affect the optically excited states of solids.
