Physical growth and menarcheal age in Tanzanian schoolchildren and adults.

Nyakyuasa and Kisi schoolchildren were studied. The Nyakyusa live in what is considered a healthy and prosperous area while the Kisi children live in what is considered an unhealthy and poor area. Both are Bantu tribes. In comparison with Dutch standards the average height and weight for age in both groups was low although the height - weight ratio was similar to the Dutch value. Retarded development is also proved by the late onset of menarche. In the Nyakyusa girls the average menarcheal age was 14.93 years while it is thought to be well over 15.5 years in the Kisi girls.
