A Flight Simulator for Surgeons - Novel Technologies for Haptic Devices in a Complex Virtual Reality Environment

Abstract This paper presents the development of an entire medical simulator for the training of minimally invasive surgery. This demands a global view on mechatronics engineering and includes the design of new mechanical structures, novel sensors and sophisticated control strategies to simulate realistic haptic feedback. Moreover, new deformation techniques for virtual organs have been implemented to allow real time operations in a complex virtual reality environment.
