Evolved Mechanisms of High-Level Visual Perception in Primates

This chapter examines mechanisms of high-level visual perception in primates from a comparative viewpoint. After introducing a conceptual framework for thinking about the evolution of vision, we review visual capabilities and neural circuits thought to support high-level vision across nonprimate mammalian orders. We then examine visual specializations that are apparently unique to primates, focusing on advanced social perception and visually guided manual actions.
