Identification of Intensive Nonlinearities in Cascade Models of Visual Cortex and its Relation to Cell Classification

Nonlinear transformations in the nervous system seem to have the function of increasing the specificity of a neuron by reducing the class of stimuli to which that neuron responds, and often by enhancing responses to other, „preferred,“ stimuli. This specificity can confer the benefit that the large number of neurons in the brain can be apportioned to concentrate on different aspects of a given information-processing task.
