DE-ASS: An Adaptive MAC Algorithm Based on Mobility Evaluation for Wireless Sensor Networks

In previous works for wireless sensor networks (WSN), it is generally assumed that the node is static. However, recent researches show there has been an increasing interest to the mobility in WSN. It, however, introduced the unique challenges to the medium access control (MAC) protocol design. In this paper, an active/sleep schedule establishing period dynamic adjusting algorithm (DE-ASS) is introduced for mobile wireless sensor networks. Based on the mobility estimation, the algorithm dynamically adjusts the interval of the active/sleep schedule establishing period to support the mobility. In addition, a specific implementation method of S-MAC protocol based on DE-ASS algorithm is presented, which is termed MS-MAC. The simulation results indicate that MS-MAC outperforms the existing S-MAC in the mobile environments.
