Reversal of structural and functional effects of long-term visual deprivation in cats.

Abstract Neonatal cats had their eyelids sutured monocularly or binocularly, after which, recovery due to forced usage of a deprived eye was assessed. Behaviorally, all cats initially appeared blind but slowly improved until all tested animals mastered a striated pattern discrimination task. Receptive fields of lateral geniculate (LGN) and striate cortex cells were essentially normal except for cortical ocular dominance patterns. These patterns were different from either normal adults or deprived cats which did not undergo forced usage. Cross-sectional areas of LGN neurons may not be influenced by binocular deprivation. Monocular deprivation causes a 35% difference in LGN soma size which is eliminated by forced usage.
