Wind turbine simulator based grid connected asymmetrical two-phase induction generator

This paper presents the simulation of a small wind turbine for a grid connected asymmetrical two-phase induction generator (TPIG). The configuration of this system consists of a wind turbine simulator using a dc motor drive, TPIG, a machine side converter (MSC) and a grid side converter (GSC). The wind turbine simulator is made from a dc motor operated by torque control for supplying mechanical power to TPIG. A three-leg voltage source inverter is used for MSC which can operate in motoring and generating modes controlled by a V/F technique based on unbalanced two-phase space vector. A single-phase switch mode converter is used for MSC which is able operate in rectification and inversion modes offering nearly sinusoidal current waveform and nearly unity power factor by controlling dc link voltage to be constant based on hysteresis current control. This system is simulated by the MATLAB/Simulink software. The simulation results show that the wind turbine simulator is able to generate the torque-speed characteristics of a small wind turbine and this system is also able to transfer power to grid.
