Adaptive Systems: Current Status and Future Implications

Over the past 10 years, signal processing and information systems have played a central role in the research activities of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Newcastle. More recently, considerable effort has been devoted to applying and implementing some of these techniques to real system problems. In particular, this paper will discuss the application and implications of our work on adaptive systems to the solution of several significant engineering problems in the areas of energy, communication and computing. Each of these areas will, we believe, play a crucial role in the next 25 years.
