A Taxonomy of Sensor Network Architectures

Several architectures have been proposed for sensor networks. However, there is a lack of an over-arching sensor network architecture. Here we present some of the issues associated with existing sensor network architectures. Next we present several sensor network architectures, including one suitable for a multi-owner environment, classifying these architectures in terms of function and compositional elements. We also highlight each architecture’s key attributes in order to identify their commonalities. In making our arguments we refer to the concept of invariants, which are components of a system that cannot be changed without losing backward compatibility [1]. Our results show that while several sensor network architectures exist, each with dierent attributes, these architectures share several invariants.
